A silver plate letter opener with a stirrup handle. This very beautifully designed, rare and practical piece sits flat on a desk or work space, and being made in a solid silver plated brass, has some weight meaning it can double as a paper weight. The handle detail at the end is trademark equestrian detail one expects from iconic Hermès items. It is an unusual stirrup shape, in this can, and allows the opener to be easily handled.
The letter opener was made for the French luxury atelier, Hermès. There has always been, and remains a strong equestrian theme to much of what Hermès make and design. Their roots are engrained in the horse world, whether it be actual riding tack and equipment to their home goods or jewellery. This piece very much embodies that.
The reverse of the letter opener signed "Hermès Paris" along with the maker mark for 'RM'. The maker in this instance has not been identified. It is presented in superb condition. Made in France, circa 1970's.
